The EU is ready to impose sanctions on the Gaddafi regime as a means of putting pressure on him. European governments will convene today to discuss the matter, Reuters reports.
Normally sanctions are a long term measure against a country, most notably affecting it’s diplomatic relations and economic position. However the BBC reports that their diplomatic sources have told the AFP news agency that the sanctions directed against the Gaddafi regime could include a freeze of assets and a visa ban.
Some countries advise caution, most notably Italy over fears that as many as 300,000 people may flee the country to Italy’s coast.
